Kapitola 1
V kraji, prostírajícím se mezi jižním cípem jezera Horikan a tokem řeky Hudsonu, v nynějším státě Nový York, zuřila již třetím rokem válka mezi Anglií a Francií o državu země, které, na štěstí, nebylo žádné souzeno dosíci. Jelikož v obou táborech válčili Indiáni, vyhrabali i mezi sebou mnohé kmeny válečnou sekeru a tak se vlastně oba nepřátelské národy ve válce spojily, aby oloupily prostoduché majitele této zalesněné krajiny o jejich přirozená práva. Kanadští Indiáni a Huroni bojovali po boku Francouzů proti Mohawkům, spojeným s Angličany. Výsledek byl ovšem pro Indiány žalostný a byli, pokud nevyhynuli, úplně zatlačeni do vnitrozemí.
Anglické pevnosti na jižním konci ,,posvátného jezera“, zvaného „Vilém Jindřich“, velel Skot, plukovník Munro, který, ocitnuv se v tísni, vyslal rychlého indiánského posla se žádostí o vydatnou posilu generálu Webbovi, velícímu tvrzi „Eduard“, o pět mil jižněji, s posádkou přes pět tisíc mužů. Krátkou vzdáleností mezi těmito dvěma místy vedla neumělá cesta, tvořící jejich spojovací čáru, která byla rozšířena pro dopravu nákladních vozů, takže syn lesů mohl snadno projíti lesními stezkami za necelé dvě hodiny, kdežto oddíl vojska se zásobami potřeboval k tomu celý den.
To patně vnuklo majoru Heywardovi myšlenku, aby podchodu celkem nepatrného pomocného šiku vybrané tlupy vojska, ubírajícího se cestou do tvrze „ Vilém Jindřich“, vydal se lesními stezkami pod vedením onoho indiánského posla a přivedl plukovníku Munroovi jeho dvě dcery, Alici a Koru.
